Mosses and liverworts on Wimbledon Common
Saturday, 18th March 2023, 14:00 - 16:00
Join expert botanist, Dr June Chatfield, for a walk exploring the mosses and liverworts of Wimbledon Common, south London.
Wimbledon Common is a rare site for London on acid sandy soil supporting heathland and a good range of attractive easily recognisable mosses typical of this habitat. Mosses are always at their best in winter which is their active growing season.
The Common is a good place to start looking at mosses and it produces some nice examples of typical heathland species that are easy to identify. If you have one, please bring a magnifying hand lens (x10).
The walk will start at the Visitor Centre near the Warden’s Office at the Windmill at 2pm on Wimbledon Common. There will be an introduction inside followed by a field excursion, bringing specimens back to the Visitor Centre for study. Beginners welcome.
Dr June Chatfield is the author of How to begin the study of Mosses and Liverworts. She has had a lifelong interest in moss and liverworts with a career as a college lecturer, museum curator, author and consultant. Dr June Chatfield has been made an OBE for services to conservation and natural history education.
