Pavement Plants in Streatham – A Walk

Saturday, 19th November 2022, 10:00 - 12:00

Pavement Plants in Streatham – A Walk
Discover what and why those plants are growing on your daily city walk

A two-hour walk starting from Streatham Hill Station looking at the variety of plants growing in pavements. We will talk about how to recognise them, where they came from, and how the pavement plant population is changing and why.

Depending on the plants which we find, we will talk about how to recognise them and their relationships with other species that might be more familiar; where they’re from – some are native, some non-natives that have become established here, some more recent garden escapes, bird seed and human food aliens; how the composition of the pavement weeds has changed over time and what might have driven any change, such as the decline in weedkiller use and climate change.

Jane Lowe is a local resident with a lifelong interest in the natural world. She is involved in submitting plant records, including from this area, to the national BSBI database /https://database.bsbi.org/.

This walk will be just on pavements, with no necessary steps. There are public toilets next to the health centre in Gracefield Gardens, as well as possibly in local cafes.

Tickets: £10 per person (maximum 15 people). Please book via the Eventbrite ticketing system below.
