Woolwich Common Plant Hunt

Saturday, 2nd October 2021, 11:00

Woolwich Common Plant Hunt
A plant discovery walk in a large area of varied grassland and hedges

This is a joint walk with Roy Vickery and The Friends of Woolwich Common

The Common stretches for 37 ha and has a variety of habitats.

The northern end is acid grassland although parts have imported soil dating from the Olympics in 2012. The southern section is mostly neutral grassland, with trees now colonising parts and in the south east corner are the remains of an old filter bed. There are hedges of hawthorn, cherry and blackthorn and it’s the only site in the Borough of the smooth tare.

Terrain includes some hard paths, but we are likely to stray off these into uneven ground, possibly concealed in long grass.

Roy is a renowned botanist specialising in plant-lore and also president of the SLBI, as well as the author of Vickery’s Folk Flora.

Roy will not be wearing a mask for audio reasons i.e. so that he can be heard, but will be happy to should any participant prefer him to.

The meeting point will be the car park in Stadium Road, Charlton SE18 4QH,opposite Queen Elizabeth Hospital, numerous buses (161, 291, 386, 486 & 469), nearest station Woolwich Arsenal, NR & DLR.
