All About Seaweed, Nayland Rock Margate

All About Seaweed, Nayland Rock Margate

Find out everything you would like to know about seaweed!

Join Ian Titley to look at the seaweed growing on the rocks and in the rock pools at Nayland Rock, Margate. Ian will talk about the algal biodiversity there, the uses of seaweed, the history of seaweed study at Margate which goes back to the very early herbalist, John Gerard (1597), of the The Herball fame.

Ian is the author of the not long published A New Atlas of the Seaweeds of Kent and is former curator and researcher at the Natural History Museum. Access to the shore is via a gentle slipway down, sand is even but some of the chalk rocks may be slippery and uneven. Please wear appropriate footwear suitable for walking on the chalk reef, such as wellies or trainers that you don’t mind getting wet (and the feet that go with them!).

The beach walk is suitable for most.

Low water is at 4pm, so we will meet at Margate station at 2.30pm, walk a few minutes to the shore and finish by 5pm.

If people want to arrive earlier, Ian recommends visiting the Turner Contemporary art gallery and/or the local town museum a short walk away.

Tickets: Members £30/Non-Members £35
