2010 is our Centenary Year - please see the What's On section for our special events celebrating this historic occasion.

The Institute provides facilities for the study of plants including ecology and conservation, and aims to encourage interest in all aspects of plant life.

Since its inception in 1910, the Institute has enabled many to develop a satisfying and absorbing interest, become better botanists, pursue their own studies, share their knowledge with like-minded individuals and contribute to our natural heritage.

Members include amateur and professional botanists, gardeners, artists, photographers, writers, ecologists, campaigners and teachers and all those who are keen to develop their knowledge of the plant kingdom.

Education: The SLBI has begun an exciting programme of structured educational workshops, sharing our passion for plants and historic environment with primary and secondary schools. Thanks to generous funding from the City Bridge Trust, visits are free to local groups. Visits last half a day and will help classes to explore their curriculum needs in plant science, history, literacy and arts. For more details download our education leaflet and booking form
