WELCOME to the SLBI website
The Institute provides facilities for the study of plants including ecology and conservation, and aims to encourage interest in all aspects of plant life.
Since its inception in 1910, the Institute has enabled many to develop a satisfying and absorbing interest, become better botanists, pursue their own studies, share their knowledge with like-minded individuals and contribute to our natural heritage.
Opening Times: Thursdays 10am - 4pm (hopefully Saturdays from Autumn 2014)
Other times by appointment: Telephone 020 8674 5787
Members include amateur and professional botanists, gardeners, artists, photographers, writers, ecologists, campaigners and teachers and all those who are keen to develop their knowledge of the plant kingdom.
The South London Botanical Institute is delighted and excited to announce it has been awarded £100,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF)www.hlf.org for our two year project, ‘Living History’. The HLF grant means the local community will have more opportunities to use the library, herbarium and botanic garden and to enjoy a wide-ranging educational programme. Members of the public will benefit from Saturday openings, particularly helpful to botanical enthusiasts who work or study during the week, and after a century of continuous use and surviving on a shoe-string, parts of the SLBI’s Victorian building will be refurbished and safeguarded for future generations.
